Flexible communications support for you and your team

Too busy to read this? We can help.

The Effective English Company is an extra pair of hands for busy communications teams.

You know those days when you’re already maxed out, your best writer’s on holiday, your assistant’s called in sick and your director asks you to ‘put a quick strategy together’ by the end of the day? That’s where we come in – just call or email and tell us what you need doing.

Effective English

Between us we have more than 30 years’ experience of working in busy communications offices. We know how often it seems there just isn’t enough capacity to get everything done. Next time this happens to you, drop us a line and we can take some of the workload off your hands.

We’re doing things differently. We work remotely, providing an extra pair of hands on demand to deliver just what you need, just when you need it. You don’t need to book us in advance or decide which days you’ll want us, and we don’t charge retainers.

Just one article? Two days a week? Three months’ support? Four newsletters a year? Five blog posts by Monday? Six hours next week? No problem.

Totally flexible communications support. No commitment; no obligation; no catch.

Want to know more? We’ll call you and explain.

How we can help you

What we can do for you

Over the years we’ve worked across the whole spectrum of communications activities, from writing to design to websites – so whatever you need doing, we can probably help.

We specialise in delivering work that is clear and effective and we are in our absolute element when producing publications and publicity materials:

  • Annual reports – we can draft sections, write a foreword or introduction, edit, proofread, design, organise print and even manage the whole project
  • Newsletters – whether print or electronic, we can craft your copy to suit the medium
  • Blog posts, press releases, articles, case studies – we research, write and edit to your brief
  • Website – we work within your brand to create copy, update pages and add images
  • Leaflets – we can arrange production from start to finish, right the way from researching, writing and designing (or managing design) through managing approval and amends to organising print and/or distribution
  • Strategy documents, proposals  and reports – we are experts at writing, editing, formatting and proofreading corporate documents
  • Powerpoint presentations – whether editing, formatting or creating from scratch – we can help

We can do as much or as little as you need across any or all of your communications activities. Just let us know how we can help and we’ll jump straight on it.

I was consistently impressed with the way in which The Effective English Company produced relevant and well written content for our newsletters with very little input from us. Ali is efficient, effective, flexible and responsive in the way she works.”

– Nigel Skill, Director, Skills Holidays

Who we are

Who we are

Ali-MarslandThe Effective English Company was founded in 2013 by Ali Marsland, a communications specialist. Ali wanted to create a way to provide an extra pair of hands for organisations in need of communications support on a totally flexible basis.

Before setting up The Effective English Company, Ali worked in communications roles for companies including John Lewis and two NHS organisations. She also spent a year working in Sudan.

The award-winning company now includes a team of ‘word warriors’ with expertise in writing, design, admin, print, photography and more. Initially supporting NHS teams across the UK, we now work with large and small companies in industries including healthcare, local authority, financial services, business support and travel.

Based in several locations around the UK, we work remotely and use a range of technology and software to keep in touch, manage our projects and make sure we’re always on top of everything. So wherever you’re based, we can help.

Ali and her team of copywriting talent are one of those rare finds that any organisation would wish to make. I’ve been particularly impressed with their ability to distil corporate jargon and create highly accessible, flowing, client-friendly copy that hits the brief each and every time.”

– Darren McCowan, Marketing Manager, Answer-4u

Who we work with

Who we work with

We’ve worked with large and small companies in industries including the NHS, life sciences, bio research, local authority, financial services, business support and travel on projects from annual reports to newsletters to website updates (see our client case studies below). We’re adept at writing for a range of audiences and are quick to learn about new industries. Most importantly, we’re not afraid to ask questions.

We know that managing a company’s communications and marketing activities isn’t easy. Strategic planning, reporting, meeting with colleagues and stakeholders and responding to urgent media enquiries can easily be a full-time job in itself, with little time left to create the materials, update the website and deliver on proactive tasks. It can feel like you’re constantly fire-fighting; trying to cram eight days of work into just five – or even three or four – in the office each week.

You need to be sure that the communications materials that leave your office are accurate, effective, on-message and on target. But you also need a life outside work – and a vacancy or absence in the team only makes things worse.

Do you find yourself always rushing around with never enough time to get everything done? Do you wish you could spend more time with your family? Be more active? Or even just enjoy a glass of wine with friends you haven’t seen for too long?

We can help.

The Effective English Company is a reliable, efficient resource that you can turn to at any time, and trust that your project is in safe hands.

The Effective English Company plays a critical role in our work. They ensure that we communicate clearly and concisely and that our written work maintains the high standards expected of us. They are always responsive, flexible and efficient – a brilliant resource to have on hand.”

– Andi Orlowski, Head of Business Intelligence – Imperial College Health Partners

I have always been pleased with the work Ali has done for us. She is consistently professional, focused and delivers work to a high standard. She’s a real asset, a team player and someone you can rely on to deliver.”

How we work

How we work

The Effective English Company is a new kind of agency – providing clear and effective communications on a totally flexible basis. We work almost entirely remotely and have little regard for ‘traditional’ working models. Rather than working at set hours, we are available when you need us; rather than sitting in traffic travelling to meetings (and charging expenses for the pleasure), we’ll pick up the phone or respond to an email; rather than ironing a shirt before we start in the morning, we just get straight on with work. Reliable, efficient, no-nonsense communications support there when you need us and waiting quietly in the wings when you don’t.

Whether you need just one article, two days’ support a week, a three-month block, four newsletters a year, five blog posts by Monday or six hours next week, we can help. We provide flexible communications support the way you need it, when you need it – with no commitment, no obligation, and no catch.

No matter how I worded my message, it just didn’t feel quite right. The Effective English Company turned it around in a day and it carried the tone I was looking for. Not only great with words but I think mind readers too!”

– Paul Jones, Integral Financial Services

If you need help today or tomorrow, get in touch and we’ll get straight on it. If you know you have work coming up, you can book us in advance. And if your one-week job turns into six months, or a two-week project becomes one day, that’s fine. We keep things simple so you only pay for the work we do when you need us; if we don’t work, you don’t pay. Click the speech marks to find out more.

Ali always provides a professional service, and is adaptable and flexible. She has a ‘can-do’ attitude and is a great person to have on the team.”

– Carole Appleby, MCIPR, MAC, Communications & Engagement Specialist

What we charge

What we charge

We keep things flexible and simply charge by the hour, regardless of the type of work we do. Just send us details of the tasks or projects you’d like us to work on as and when you have them ready and we’ll get busy delivering your communications work. Simple.

Our rates work on either an ad hoc or package basis. The ad hoc approach offers total flexibility – we simply invoice each month for the hours we completed in the previous month. If we don’t work, we don’t invoice.

If you know you’re going to need support over a few weeks, months or more, one of our packages may be more cost effective:

  • Ad hoc support: £70ph *Maximum flexibility*
  • 10 hours of our time; valid for two months – £650 (equiv. to £65ph)
  • 20 hours of our time (about half a day a week); valid for one month – £1,200 (equiv. to £60ph)
  • 50 hours of our time (about 1.5 days a week); valid for one month – £2,750 (equiv. to £55ph)
  • 80 hours of our time (about 2.5 days a week); valid for one month – £4,000 (equiv. to £50ph)
  • 120 hours of our time (about 3.5 days a week); valid for one month – £5,400 (equiv. to £45ph)

(All costs are plus VAT.)

With all of our packages, hours can be used at any time during the validity period (one or two months). At the end of the period the package will renew automatically. If you run out of hours we will pause work until the next package kicks in – or you can renew early. There’s no minimum commitment – cancel, upgrade or downgrade at any time (just give us 30 days’ notice of any changes).

If you’d like an estimate of how long a piece of work will take us please ask. If you have a specific project in mind and would like a quote drop us a line.

The blog posts were beyond my expectations and fulfilled my brief perfectly – the topic was researched throughout, the posts were written in a very engaging way and delivered on time and the value for money is just excellent.”

– Kasia Bigda, IADigital Ltd
