Flexible support for busy communications teams

Too busy to read this? We can help.

The Effective English Company is an extra pair of hands for busy communications teams.

You know those days when you’re already maxed out, your best writer’s on holiday, your assistant’s called in sick and your director asks you to ‘put a quick strategy together’ by the end of the day? That’s where we come in – just call or email and tell us what you need doing.

Effective English

Between us we have more than 30 years’ experience of working in busy communications offices. We know how often it seems there just isn’t enough capacity to get everything done. Next time this happens to you, drop us a line and we can take some of the workload off your hands.

We’re doing things differently. We work remotely, providing an extra pair of hands on demand to deliver just what you need, just when you need it. You don’t need to book us in advance or decide which days you’ll want us, and we don’t charge retainers.

Just one article? Two days a week? Three months’ support? Four newsletters a year? Five blog posts by Monday? Six hours next week? No problem.

Totally flexible communications support. No commitment; no obligation; no catch.

Want to know more? We’ll call you and explain.

The Effective English Company gave us flexible, reliable communications support when we needed it for several years. Their organisational skills and attention to detail are quite extraordinary.”

– Sarah Hewitt, Head of Communications, NHS Nottingham City Clinical Commissioning Group

How we can help you

How we can help you

Over the years we’ve worked across the whole spectrum of communications activities, so whatever you need doing, we can probably help.

We are in our absolute element when producing publications and publicity materials – both online and offline. Newsletters, blog posts, press releases, website copy, articles, leaflets, annual reports, case studies, strategy documents and even Powerpoint presentations – we can do as much or as little as you need from researching, writing, editing and proofreading through liaising, designing (or managing design), managing approval and amends to organising print and/or distribution. We’re also pretty handy at updating websites – just ping us an email whenever you need any copy, images or pages adding, deleting or updating, and we’ll jump straight on it.

I was consistently impressed with the way in which The Effective English Company produced relevant and well written content for our newsletters with very little input from us. Ali is efficient, effective, flexible and responsive in the way she works.”

– Nigel Skill, Director, Skills Holidays

Who we are

Who we are

Ali-MarslandThe Effective English Company is run by Ali Marsland, with support from a distributed team of ‘word warriors’ with expertise in writing, design, admin, print, photography and more.

Ali began her communications career editing her school magazine in 1993, and before setting up The Effective English Company she worked in communications roles for companies including John Lewis and two NHS organisations. She also spent a year working in Sudan.

The word warriors include Jo and Kirsty (writing, editing and proofreading), Eleri (design and photography), Rose (admin and finance) and Phil (printing). Much of the time we also have a work experience student shadowing us, asking questions and hopefully picking up some new skills and tips.

Based in several locations around the UK, we work remotely and use a range of technology and software to keep in touch, manage our projects and make sure we’re always on top of everything. So wherever you’re based, we can help.

Ali and her team of copywriting talent are one of those rare finds that any organisation would wish to make. I’ve been particularly impressed with their ability to distil corporate jargon and create highly accessible, flowing, client-friendly copy that hits the brief each and every time.”

– Darren McCowan, Deputy Marketing Director, Stonebridge Associated Colleges

Who we work with

Who we work with

We’ve worked with large and small companies in industries including health, local authority, finance, business support and travel. We’re adept at writing for a range of audiences and are quick to learn about new industries. Most importantly, we’re not afraid to ask questions.

We know that managing a company’s communications and marketing activities isn’t easy. Strategic planning, reporting, meeting with colleagues and stakeholders and responding to urgent media enquiries can easily be a full-time job in itself, with little time left to create the materials, update the website and deliver on proactive tasks. It can feel like you’re constantly fire-fighting; trying to cram eight days of work into just five – or even three or four – in the office each week.

You need to be sure that the communications materials that leave your office are accurate, effective, on-message and on target. But you also need a life outside work – and a vacancy or absence in the team only makes things worse.

Do you find yourself always rushing around with never enough time to get everything done? Do you wish you could spend more time with your family? Be more active? Or even just enjoy a glass of wine with friends you haven’t seen for too long?

We can help.

The Effective English Company is a reliable, efficient resource that you can turn to at any time, and trust that your project is in safe hands.

Ali is a great team player and a safe pair of hands for the writing and editing projects where we’ve needed support.”

– Cath Lovatt, Healthcare Partner – Social & Local CIC

Over the years we’ve worked with several large public sector organisations as well as some smaller companies. Click on the logos to find out more.

I have always been pleased with the work Ali has done for us. She is consistently professional, focused and delivers work to a high standard. She’s a real asset, a team player and someone you can rely on to deliver.”

How we work

How we work

The Effective English Company is a new kind of communications agency. We work almost entirely remotely and have little regard for ‘traditional’ working models. Rather than working at set hours, we are available when you need us; rather than sitting in traffic travelling to meetings (and charging expenses for the pleasure), we’ll pick up the phone or respond to an email; rather than ironing a shirt before we start in the morning, we just get straight on with work. Reliable, efficient, no-nonsense communications support there when you need us and waiting quietly in the wings when you don’t.

Whether you need just one article, two days’ support a week, a three-month block, four newsletters a year, five blog posts by Monday or six hours next week, we can help. We provide flexible communications support the way you need it, when you need it – with no commitment, no obligation, and no catch.

No matter how I worded my message, it just didn’t feel quite right. The Effective English Company turned it around in a day and it carried the tone I was looking for. Not only great with words but I think mind readers too!”

– Paul Jones, Integral Financial Services

If you need help today or tomorrow, get in touch and we’ll get straight on it. If you know you have work coming up, you can book us in advance. And if your one-week job turns into six months, or a two-week project becomes one day, that’s fine. We keep things simple so you only pay for the work we do when you need us; if we don’t work, you don’t pay. Click the speech marks to find out more.

Ali always provides a professional service, and is adaptable and flexible. She has a ‘can-do’ attitude and is a great person to have on the team.”

What we charge

What we charge

We like simple, and we like flexible. For many of our clients we simply charge by the hour for the work we do. Just send us details of the tasks or projects you’d like us to work on as and when you have them ready. We’ll get busy delivering your communications work, and then at the beginning of each month we’ll send you an invoice for the hours we completed in the previous month. If we don’t work, we don’t invoice. Simple.

This is our most flexible payment option as the flat hourly rate covers any type of work. For clients who like to work in this way we charge £45 per hour (+ VAT). If you’d like an estimate of how long a piece of work will take us please ask.

Some clients only send us briefs for writing work and prefer to be charged a fixed price for each task. This can work well for press releases, features, blog posts, newsletter or magazine articles and website copy. We’re happy to work in whichever way is best for you.

The amount of work that goes into creating a piece of writing is affected by the total word count of the piece (how long it is) and also by the amount of research we need to do to collate the information to include in the copy. To help keep things simple for everyone we’ve built a calculator that does all the maths for us.

For an estimate of how much your piece of writing will cost on a fixed-price basis just tell us how many words it will be and how much research we’ll need to do:

0GBP (+VAT)

Please note that the calculated amount above is intended only to give an indication of likely cost. The final cost may be higher or lower depending on the exact work involved. We do offer discounts for multiple tasks booked together. If you’d like a quote for your specific project drop us a line.

Whether we work on an hourly basis or a per-task basis, there is no retainer fee and no commitment; we just send an invoice at the end of the month for the work we’ve done – simple, and flexible.

The blog posts were beyond my expectations and fulfilled my brief perfectly – the topic was researched throughout, the posts were written in a very engaging way and delivered on time and the value for money is just excellent.”
